Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

Snow White and the Huntsman is a 2012 fantasy film based on the well-known German fairytale "Snow White" compiled by the Brothers Grimm. The film is directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman is his first feature film ever) and written by Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock and Hossein Amini, starring Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga - my reviews here, here and here), Charlize Theron (Monster - 2003), Chris Hemsworth (Home and Away tv series - 185 episodes in 2004) and Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - 2011).

The Evil Queen Ravenna (brilliant role played by C. Theron) is told by her mirror that in order to remain the fairest in the land and rule forever, she needs to eat Snow White's (K. Stewart) heart. Therefore she orders the Huntsman (C. Hemsworth) to track her down and kill the girl. But instead Eric the Huntsman winds up becoming her protector and mentor as they team up to vanquish the queen and rule the restored kingdom.

What I loved the most about Snow White and the Huntsman were the spectacular visual effects that truly blew my mind. And it was a highly gripping film: those more than two hours flew by imperceptibly and I was left craving for more afterwards.
The most beautiful and completely out-of-this-world place was a so called fairy sanctuary where Snow White was temporarily hiding together with the Huntsman, a band of dwarves and her childhood friend William (S. Claflin). I wish magic forests like that actually existed because it would be the perfect spot for taking lovely photographs.

In fact one teeny tiny thing disturbed me and it was the matter that everything was left vague between Snow White and the Huntsman. I'm just curious. And I already found out a sequel was planned, so it's pretty exciting to possibly get to see what is really about to happen.

All in all, if you enjoyed Alice in Wonderland (2010 - my review here) and Red Riding Hood (2011 - my review here) (like I obviously did), you will also love Snow White and the Huntsman. It's definitely worth watching! 9,5/10

  2. I really really loved this movie! And it was great one to see with my bf, there wasn't too much "love scenes" or things like that which he hates about girls movies heh. :) It was so nice that a real triangle drama didn't develop there.. OOOH SEQUEL! I knew it.

  9. I loved Alice in Wonderland, even though boyfriend was snoring next to me. I really wanted to see Snow white, but because of the negative reviews it's been having I'm kind of scared of being disappointed :D But even so, Chris Hemsworth is worth watching every second of it (drool) <3

  15. Dear Maiken, it's funny, when I was loading your blog I just was thinking that it would be nice to see another film review from you - and here we go;)))
I really liked the movie. the plot is pretty simple though. But I adore Charlize her talent and beauty! I couldn't tear my eye from her! she's mesmerizing! I'm happy that you liked the movie too. It's a pity though that the movie caused such a scandal afterwards....

  16. This movie was advertised so much here in England. Looked great but I never ended up seeing it. I should see if it is out on DVD because the plot sounds really exciting and I love a lot of the actors - especially Chris Hemsworth. As Fashion-Bridge mentioned, the scandal did put me off a bit and it's a shame that K.Stewart wont be in the next one although I dislike her acting. Just seems like it will be odd to have two different people play the part.

    Great review!

  23. I haven't seen this movie yet, but I will definately see it soon, so then I can better comment on how it was. Right now it feels like there are some many bad pieces of news flying around concerning Kristen Stewart that I'm not that eager to see her films. I did see "On the road", and must say that the male actors were the best in it.
Thank you for your comments on my blog! I'm happy that my photos make you reflect on your own life! Thank you for the compliment!
I visit Estonia about once a year usually but now it has been two years since my last visit...I should definately go this fall.

  30. I LOVE the way you wrote this post, it's a bit critical and very honest, I don;t know why it's just addicting to read your blog, and yes, I simply adore those three movies(alice, red riding hood, snowhite), I love how these dark fairytales are just demonstrated

  35. I thought it was very aesthetically pleasing on the eye. Charlize Theron is just so beautiful, even when she ages! I did think Kristen Stewart however, was the weak link! Great post little darling! Love Barbie xxx

  36. I'm a huge fan of the Snow white's original fairy tail. So automatically I was critical about this movie. But in the end I liked it. It has all the important thing from the tail and combines them with new creative views. Despite all the hatred for Kristen, I liked her acting. Charlize is marvellous, of course.
You wrote an amazing review, darling, great post.

  42. The costumes and visual effects were great. A nice movie to watch in the cinema. And it turns out modern versions of the classical fairytales are quite enjoyable. I wasn't even bothered by Kristen's lack of acting skills.
